Is Amazon Prime Worth Joining Just for Big Deal Days?

Is Amazon Prime Worth Joining Just for Big Deal Days?

Amazon Prime Big Deal Days is underway in Australia, running from 29 September to 5 October.

It also kicks off the busy stretch of shopping events leading into Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Christmas sales.

If you are not already a Prime member, the first question is whether it is worth joining for this sale alone. The answer can be yes, even for one purchase—but it is also worth remembering that this is the start of the sales season. You do not have to buy now simply because an offer has a deadline.

Prime costs $9.99 a month or $79 a year in Australia, and eligible new members can try it free for 30 days. That means you do not need an annual subscription to shop the week-long sale. Amazon’s event and membership details

When the fee pays for itself

Imagine you have already decided to buy a coffee machine. It costs $600 with Prime, while the best comparable price you can find elsewhere is $625.

Even after paying $9.99 for one month of Prime, you are about $15 ahead. If you qualify for a free trial, you would save the full $25, provided there are no other differences in delivery costs.

Now imagine another retailer has the same machine for $605. In that case, paying $9.99 solely to access Amazon’s price would cost you more.

That is the real test: what would you pay for the same item if you did not join Prime?

One planned purchase is enough reason to look

You do not need to fill a basket to make a one-month membership worthwhile. A good price on something you already intended to buy could cover the fee on its own.

The key phrase is already intended to buy. Browsing a major sale can make an unplanned purchase feel urgent. Before ordering, it helps to ask whether you would still want the product if you had seen its price on an ordinary Tuesday.

For larger purchases, check that you are comparing the exact same model, including its size, specifications and included accessories. Then compare the final price with delivery from a few other Australian retailers. If the Prime offer comes out comfortably ahead, joining for a month may be an easy decision.

What about the free trial?

If Amazon offers you a 30-day trial, you may be able to shop Big Deal Days without paying a membership fee. Check the terms shown when you sign up and note when the trial renews. If you only wanted Prime for the sale, you can decide whether to keep it before a paid month begins.

The $79 annual plan deserves a separate decision. Prime’s delivery and entertainment benefits may make it worthwhile for you over a year, but there is no need to commit to twelve months just to access a seven-day sale.

If you shop on Amazon regularly

The value of Prime does not have to come from a single Big Deal Days purchase. If you order from Amazon regularly, free delivery on eligible items can add up, particularly when you make smaller orders. Faster delivery is useful too: depending on the item and your postcode, some orders qualify for one-day or same-day delivery. Check the delivery promise on each product, as these options are not available for every order. Amazon’s Prime delivery details

So there are really two ways to assess the membership. If you are joining only for Big Deal Days, compare the saving on your planned purchase with the $9.99 monthly fee. If you already shop on Amazon often, consider the delivery costs and time you might save over the months ahead as well. That may make Prime worthwhile even when this week’s deals alone do not cover the fee.

Our take

Join for Big Deal Days if a planned purchase saves you more than the cost of joining—or if you are eligible for a free trial and find a price that works for you. If you cannot find something you need at a better final price, there is no reason to subscribe just because the event is on.

At Discount Offers, we believe the best sale decision starts with a simple question: is this a good price for this product, today? Answer that first, and the membership decision becomes much easier.
